Updated October 3, 2026. There is a moment on a Japan trip when the suitcase stops being a travel companion and starts becoming a logistical problem.
You check out of a hotel in Tokyo at 9 a.m., your next hotel in Kyoto does not take check-in until the afternoon, and suddenly you are trying to drag a large suitcase through a station, onto a train, up stairs, and across a busy sightseeing area. Japan has a better solution for many travelers: send the luggage ahead.
Japan’s National Tourism Organization actively promotes “Hands-Free Travel,” which includes airport-to-hotel delivery, hotel-to-hotel delivery, and luggage storage. Major airports including Narita, Haneda, and Kansai offer luggage delivery services, while many stations have coin lockers. JNTO’s luggage and storage guide explains the overall system and common limitations.
How Luggage Delivery Works in Japan
The basic idea is simple. Instead of carrying your suitcase from one city to the next, you hand it to a delivery counter or hotel, provide the destination details, and travel separately. Depending on the service and route, the luggage can arrive later the same day or on a specified date.
For travelers staying in hotels, the process often feels almost invisible: leave the bag at the front desk, complete the delivery form, and keep only the essentials for the journey. JAL ABC, one of the major Hands-Free Travel providers, currently allows airport-to-hotel delivery from Narita, Haneda and Kansai Airport, with delivery dates and times available for eligible destinations. When Sending Your Luggage Ahead Makes the Most Sense
You do not need to use luggage delivery every day. It becomes especially useful on city-change days.
Imagine a Tokyo hotel checkout followed by a Shinkansen to Kyoto. Without delivery, your day becomes a sequence of small luggage decisions: where to put the suitcase at the station, whether the coin lockers are full, how much space there is on the train, and how far you have to walk after arriving.
With delivery, you can keep a small day bag with your passport, wallet, phone, medication, charger and a change of clothes, then travel to Kyoto without the large suitcase.
This is particularly useful when your itinerary includes Shinkansen travel, crowded sightseeing districts, children, or multiple hotel changes. JNTO specifically recommends Hands-Free Travel for visitors carrying large luggage, traveling with small children, or wanting to start sightseeing immediately after arrival. JNTO: Luggage & Storage.
Airport to Hotel Delivery
This is one of the easiest versions to understand because you can solve the luggage problem immediately after landing.
After arriving at Narita, Haneda, or Kansai International Airport, you take your luggage to a participating delivery counter instead of taking it onto the airport train or bus. JAL ABC currently has luggage-delivery counters at major airport terminals and accepts deliveries to eligible addresses in Japan. JAL ABC Hands-Free Travel.
The important word is eligible. Delivery is not simply “send it anywhere and collect it whenever you want.” Destination coverage, cut-off time, luggage size, weight, and delivery timing depend on the service you choose.
For example, JAL ABC states that its general airport delivery service can accept one piece up to 240 cm in total dimensions and up to 50 kg, while its Kansai Airport service lists a lower maximum of 160 cm and 30 kg for luggage sent through that airport service. JAL ABC airport luggage delivery.
Hotel-to-Hotel Delivery: The Most Useful Part for Multi-City Trips
This is the option that can change how you build a Japan itinerary.
Suppose you are doing Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka. You do not necessarily need to carry a full suitcase on every transfer. Many hotels can arrange baggage delivery to the next hotel, and JNTO notes that even some convenience stores can accept luggage for shipment when a suitable hotel service is not available.
Before you check out, ask your hotel’s front desk whether they can send luggage to your next accommodation. You will generally need the destination hotel information and the date you expect to arrive.
JAL ABC also offers hotel delivery services in selected areas and currently describes same-day hotel delivery options from Kansai Airport to parts of Osaka and Kyoto. Its current Kansai service has a 12:30 p.m. airport drop-off deadline for eligible same-day deliveries, with hotel pickup available after 8 p.m. for that product. Coin Lockers: Better for a Few Hours
Sometimes sending the suitcase away is unnecessary. You only need somewhere to put it while you explore.
That is where Japan’s coin lockers are useful. JNTO says many major stations and tourist facilities have lockers in different sizes, with typical prices around ¥300 to ¥600, although the actual price varies by location and locker size. Many modern facilities can also accept IC cards. JNTO luggage storage guidance.
The catch is availability. Lockers in busy stations can fill quickly, especially around major sightseeing areas and during crowded travel periods.
A locker therefore works best for a few hours. It is a storage solution, not a replacement for hotel-to-hotel delivery when you need to travel across Japan without a suitcase.
Which One Should You Use?
| Situation | Usually practical | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landing at an airport with large suitcases | Airport → hotel delivery | Start sightseeing without carrying everything |
| Changing cities between hotels | Hotel → hotel delivery | Travel between cities with a small day bag |
| Exploring for a few hours before check-in | Coin locker | Temporary storage is enough |
| Need luggage later the same day | Check same-day delivery eligibility | Some routes have strict cut-off times |
| Large or unusual baggage | Confirm the carrier’s limits first | Size and weight restrictions vary |
The important thing is to match the service to the duration of your problem. A locker solves a few hours. Delivery solves a travel day.
What Should Stay in Your Day Bag?
Never send everything.
Keep your passport, wallet, phone, medicines, travel documents, valuables, chargers and anything you absolutely need that day with you. JNTO and individual carriers publish exclusions for delivery services, and these can include valuables, fragile items, fresh food, liquids, and hazardous materials. JNTO luggage limitations.
A good test is simple: could you comfortably spend the next 12 hours without opening the suitcase? If the answer is no, move some items into your day bag before sending it.
What About the Shinkansen?
Luggage delivery is especially useful when your itinerary includes a Shinkansen. Tokaido Shinkansen rules distinguish between standard luggage and oversized luggage. JR Central currently defines oversized baggage as luggage with total dimensions between 161 cm and 250 cm, and travelers bringing that size need a seat reservation with an oversized baggage area. Luggage over 250 cm cannot be brought aboard. JR Central luggage information.
This is another reason delivery can be attractive. Instead of building your train journey around where a large suitcase will fit, you can send the suitcase ahead and keep the train trip simple.
That does not mean every suitcase should be shipped. A normal carry-on-sized bag that fits under the luggage rules may be easier to keep with you. Delivery is most useful when the bag itself is making your route harder than it needs to be.
How Early Should You Send It?
This is where people get caught.
Delivery timing depends on the carrier, origin, destination, acceptance time, and service product. JAL ABC states that the earliest possible delivery date for its general airport-to-address service can be the next day or later, depending on drop-off time and destination. Its same-day Kansai Airport hotel product has a specific airport cut-off time. JAL ABC airport-to-address service.
So do not assume that “sent today” automatically means “waiting at the next hotel tonight.” Ask the counter staff about the expected arrival date before handing over the suitcase.
Hotel-to-Hotel Delivery Checklist
Before sending a suitcase to your next hotel, make sure the hotel accepts incoming luggage. Confirm the exact name of the property, your reservation date, and the expected check-in date.
Then keep the delivery receipt or tracking number. JAL ABC provides web-based tracking for its delivery service, although tracking can take some time to become visible after shipment. JAL ABC delivery details.
Finally, keep a photo of the suitcase and its identifying features. It is a small precaution, but it makes identification easier if you are traveling with several similar bags.

Is Luggage Delivery Worth Paying For?
It depends on what you are buying with the delivery fee.
You are not really paying for a truck to move a suitcase. You are paying to remove a chain of small problems: carrying the bag through a station, finding elevator access, searching for a locker, waiting at a hotel, or having to return to the hotel before sightseeing.
For a traveler with one small suitcase on a relaxed trip, delivery may not add much value. For a family with several large cases moving from Tokyo to Kyoto, the convenience can be much more noticeable.
The best time to use it is when the luggage is starting to control the itinerary.
A Simple Japan Luggage Strategy
For a first-time trip, you do not need to plan every suitcase movement in advance.
Keep your everyday essentials in a small personal bag. Carry a normal-size suitcase yourself when the journey is easy. Use coin lockers when you only need storage for a few hours. Use hotel or airport delivery when you are crossing cities or want to start sightseeing without the weight.
That combination gives you something more valuable than empty hands: freedom to design the day around where you want to go rather than where your suitcase can go.
